Firmware and Hardware Platform Details

Additional or alternate functionality can be obtained for 4Links SpaceWire test equipment, so that one unit can serve you for multiple jobs (and thus can offer a significant cost saving over multiple units).

  • Extra options (see the Product Options page) may be added to your existing products;
  • Your existing hardware platform may be used for a different purpose by buying completely new firmware for it;
  • You may upgrade a unit's platform hardware, in order to accommodate extra processing resources or connectors and thus support extra firmware.

User-installable firmware upgrades (supplied on a memory card) can be used to upgrade or change the functionality of an existing platform, provided it is capable of running the new firmware. Such upgrades are available for any product listed in the same column in the table below as your existing product.

Upgraded, or extra, firmware for a product that is listed in one column, to run a facility which is listed in a different column, may involve hardware changes that will require your EtherSpaceLink unit to be returned briefly to 4Links in the UK.

The hardware platform requirements of each product are signified by the suffixes to the product code in the table above.

The baseline RG201 platform is configured with one SpaceWire port and is not expandable beyond having rear SMA connectors for time synchronisation on an ATI (suffix "S").

The baseline RG408 platform (with suffix -L) is configured with eight SpaceWire ports, and may be expanded as follows:

An "M" suffix indicates enhanced platform resources with
greater processing and memory facilities
(RG408-M or RG408-MS).
This provides for greater than four ports on a DSI, for double the recording buffer memory on an MSR, and for more ports or RMAP memory on an SRR.
No inter-box synchronization An "S" suffix indicates an enhanced platform with
SMA connectors (RG201-S or RG408-LS or RG408-MS).
This provides for inter-box time-tag synchronization (on the DSI, MSR and ATI), for external triggers (on the DSI and MSR) and for tri-state controls (on the DSI).
Front-mounted SpaceWire connectors An "R" suffix indicates platform with rear-mounted SpaceWire connectors.

All of the 4Links units can be supplied with their SpaceWire ports on the rear of the unit, rather than on the front. This might be preferred for static configurations where cables will not be frequently re-plugged and a cable-free frontal appearance is desired. Upgrades involving the relocation of the SpaceWire connectors from the front of a unit to the rear, or vice-versa, are not normally economically viable.
